How to Effectively Use a Power Toothbrush

Brusha brusha brusha!

We have all been in quarantine for a long time now and I know that many of our lives have drastically changed. However, it is extremely important for all of us to use our time at home to maintain adequate oral hygiene habits.

In this blog post, I will be discussing the importance of brushing your teeth and finding the right toothbrush! Specifically, I will be talking about Arm & Hammer’s new Spinbrush with Dual Brush Head Action that works exceptionally well alongside their Essentials Fluoride toothpaste that I included in a past blog post.

Why Brush Your Teeth?

I have been increasing my oral hygiene habits because I simply have the time! While I hope that most people are brushing their teeth at least twice a day, I am aware that many individuals only brush their teeth once a day, usually in the morning. But why is this an issue?

It is extremely important for everyone to brush their teeth at least twice a day because of the buildup of bacteria that occurs in our mouths. This buildup occurs as we expose our teeth to various properties that can lead to cavity formation, such as the sugars and acid found in the foods that we eat and various types of bacteria. Therefore, while it is very important to brush your teeth in the morning, it is especially important to maintain healthy oral hygiene habits at night, because it will help remove the exposure to the cavity-forming properties that have built up throughout the day. It may also be helpful to floss periodically throughout the day to help control the buildup, especially if you have been snacking more often like I have!

What Toothbrush Should I Use?

I always recommend everyone to use a power toothbrush instead of a regular toothbrush. Power toothbrushes have been proven to remove more plaque and tartar than regular toothbrushes.

A power toothbrush that I have really been enjoying lately is Arm & Hammer’s Spinbrush. It is extremely effective in removing plaque and bacteria because it is powerful and moves in both vertical and circular motions. What I especially love is that it is convenient to find, as it is available in many stores such as Walgreens, CVS, Target, and even Amazon!

How Do I Use a Power Toothbrush?

It is important to keep in mind that using a power toothbrush is different than using a regular toothbrush. If you plan on using a power toothbrush, such as Arm & Hammer’s Spinbrush, you want to angle the brush towards the gumline. For example, if you are brushing your top teeth, you want to angle the brush upwards and downwards if you are brushing your bottom teeth. When brushing the front of your teeth, however, you may angle the brush straight and it will still clean very effectively.

One of the most important areas of your teeth to brush effectively is your lower anteriors, or your front bottom teeth. This area is prone to more calcium deposits and tartar buildup due to the increased mineralization of bacteria caused by a salivary duct located on the floor of the mouth, right by your lower anteriors. Therefore, try to spend more time brushing and flossing that area! You may even tie your floss in a knot to help further break up the tartar buildup and remove bacteria.

What Toothpaste Should I Brush With?

Using the right toothpaste is extremely important for maintaining healthy oral habits. A toothpaste that I have really been enjoying recently is Arm & Hammer’s Essentials Fluoride toothpaste because it contains 100% all-natural baking soda and 0.24% fluoride, which have various clinically proven benefits such as whitening, reducing tooth decay, and strengthening of the enamel. I have noticed that my teeth look whiter and feel cleaner since using the Essentials Fluoride toothpaste in conjunction with their Spinbrush! Summary

Because a majority of us are spending more time at home and are due for our regular dental cleanings, it is extremely important for us to get our oral hygiene habits in order. If you haven’t already, I recommend that you switch to a power toothbrush and brush your teeth at least twice a day, focusing more time on your lower anterior teeth. In addition, make sure to floss at least once a day, and in between snacks, to reduce the buildup of plaque and bacteria in the mouth. All we have is time right now, so make sure you are doing your part in keeping your teeth clean and healthy! Stay safe, everyone.
